I am starting this blog to write about my experiences meeting and photographing all types of wonderful people. I also intend to use this blog to give advice in preparation for photo sessions and to chat about local activities in Bellingham, WA and surrounding areas. Follow along with my journey as a mother and a lifestyle family photographer.
If you are here then that means you've booked a mini session with me! Thank you so much and I am so excited to photograph your family!
If you’ve never done a mini session, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a miniature version of a normal full session. They are quick moving sessions scheduled back to back, at one central location. These sessions last 15 minutes in length, with a smaller delivery of images. If you are late, that cuts into the time of your session. If you are 10 minutes late for your 15-minute session, unfortuneatly, your session will only be 5 minutes. Please arrive early for your session and plan accordingly to getting kids in and out of the car/parking/walking to the location. If you booked a studio mini, you will see the previous family leave the studio and then you may come in. If you booked an outdoor mini, please wait off to the side until I finish up with the previous family.
Now the big question! What to wear?? Here are my top tips for styling your session.
#1 Don't match- coordinate!
Pick a color combination for your family to work within. We don’t want everyone to match perfectly or wear nothing but a single color, but we also don’t want everyone wearing different colors and patterns.
#2 Avoid busy patterns, go for earthtones, textures, and solid colors. These are the most classic & timeless and will guarantee your outfits are still in style years from now - Rather than a trend! Its also best to aim for layers in your clothing to provide visual interest and movement (especially for the girls! Dresses or a flowy shawl etc.)
#3 Fitted = Best! While flowy articles of clothing for the girls is fantastic, with pants + shirts for the boys, aim for more fitted clothing that is on the tighter end of what you would normally wear. Avoid baggy jeans or loose fitting shirts etc.
#4 Comfort is key! Make sure you select clothing that is comfortable for your kiddos! If you’re planning outfits outside of what they are used to, I’d suggest “breaking them in” a few days in advance to get them used to the feeling of wearing those clothes. Trust me, this makes a HUGE difference!
My goal is to make this a fun, relaxing experience. These tips will allow you to have the best possible session. Remember, no single session is perfect, and it does not have to be! I will guide you into poses and areas with beautiful lighting. Your job is to love on your family and just have fun!
Often times parents will tell their children to look at the camera and smile. I will make sure I get great photos of everyone looking and smiling and will direct that at the appropriate times. However, in order to get those beautiful, candid. genuine moments, its best not to tell children to pose and smile. Less pressure on the kids produces the best photos! Mostly I will suggest fun things (like go attack mom and dad, dance together, play, etc).
